HOW HRT WORKS
Oestrogen and progesterone are hormones that occur naturally in your body. But when you reach menopause, your levels of these hormones fall. This can lead to a wide range of symptoms including hot flushes, sleep disturbances, bone health issues and more.
HRT acts like a missing puzzle piece, replacing the hormones that you’ve lost, and can help to restore balance to your hormonal system.
TYPES OF HRT

Oestrogen-only
HRT
For women who have had a hysterectomy (surgery to remove the uterus)

Combined oestrogen and progesterone
For women who have not had a hysterectomy - the progesterone helps to protect the womb

Low-dose vaginal oestrogen
For women who have vaginal discomfort or dryness

Androgen
replacement
Can be useful for women with a low sexual drive
Your healthcare provider will advise which type is most suitable for you.
BENEFITS OF HRT
HRT comes in various forms, including tablets, skin patches, gels and sprays, to ease symptoms and improve overall quality of life.
HRT can help treat hot flushes, night sweats, sleep problems, mood swings, anxiety, low mood and vaginal dryness.
COMMON SIDE EFFECTS AND OTHER CONSIDERATIONS
It’s important to understand the benefits and risks of your treatment options. In some women with certain medical histories, some types of HRT can be associated with an increased risk of certain health conditions, including blood clots, stroke, heart disease, and breast cancer. The decision to use HRT should be made in consultation with a healthcare provider, who can provide personalised guidance based on individual health history and risk factors.
Common side effects for example include nausea, breast tenderness, bloating or headaches. Please note, this list is not exhaustive, so if you’ve been prescribed hormones, please read the patient information leaflet that comes with them.
